  • The Blind Side

    The Back Story is a very crucial part of The Blind Side. The story starts off with this back story of the entire meaning of the story. This beginning to a story gives more context and detail to the meaning of a book than I have seen in most works that I have read. When you look deep into this work you can truly see the meaning that is so important to the development of the entirety of the story. 

    This writing starts with talk about one of the most famous football players that is known till this day, Joe Theisman. Joe Theisman is the player that in his game playing for the Washington Redskins against the New York Giants in 1985 was subjected to a career ending injury that shocked the whole football world. This injury was a broken leg that was caused by a lack of protection for Joe Theisman as the quarterback during a play that was quite obviously meant to go very very differently.
    In the first chapter it counts down the play second by second depicting each and every action that took place on the field that day. While it is nothing like being there watching the incident take place in front of you that day, it still gives you a very specific depiction of the scene. Yes, this story is entirely about what this first chapter depicts. However, it is ever so important that we understand the true meaning of this first chapter in order to understand the rest of the story. Yes, I understand that this analysis is in the first chapter of this book. However, the true meaning goes on throughout the entirety of the book. 

    Now, the beginning of this story is meant to show the importance of the defensive position of offensive tackle. Each second of this chapter shows the importance of protecting yourself from your blind side. Which is exactly what Joe Theismann didn’t have when he was injured. Being hit from the blind side can be one of the most painful and horrible things when it happens to you, whether it be in metaphor or actuality. Many people often expose themselves to being hit from a blind side, but it is often because they didn’t prepare enough. 

    When analyzing this chapter I see a couple of things. All of which are very important things that transfer over from this book to real life. The first being what you never see coming always happens. That is what happened to Joe Theismann. He never expected to be taken out by a career ending hit. This shows us that we should always protect ourselves from the worst. We hear this in the saying prepare for the worst, and hope for the best. For instance, if Joe Theismann had prepared protection in that play would he have been hit like that? Most likely not. Moral of this is to always help yourself by protecting yourself from your weaknesses whether you know they are there or not. 

    The second thing I was able to analyze is how this chapter tries to show us how delicate life and what we have in it can be. Many people, including myself, often take things in life for granted when we shouldn’t. Chances are Joe Theismann from time to time took what he had for granted. Sure, maybe he never did, but we don’t know that. Most people would read this story and think nothing of this chapter, but if you analyze, as I have, you will see the true meaning of the story. 

    Yes, this story is meant to be entertaining and fun to read. However, what many don’t realize about almost every story that they read is that there is a deeper meaning. When I am asked to analyze a work this is what I look for. The deeper meaning is always so much more important than the store itself. Oftentimes when you make a mistake you are tough on yourself, and it often feels that others are harder on you. However, what you don’t realize is that those who are hard on you want to see you succeed more than yourself.  This story is a testament to it. If you read further in the story you see that the people who were hard on Michael Oher wanted to see him succeed more than anybody else. However, more importantly I can assure you that everybody was hard on Joe Theismann, but there is one thing we never thought of and it doesn’t talk about in the story. How were people hard on him before and after the accident? I know that it isn’t exactly what we think of when reading this story, but it can be very important. 

    I can assure that many people missed the meaning behind the author putting this story in the first chapter of this story. However, by missing this they are missing some of the key meanings of this story. These are the delicacies of life, and always preparing for the worst while hoping for the best.

  • Blue Star Mothers

    Over the nineteen years that I have been alive, there have been many experiences and people who can help to define who I am and what I stand for. I have had many experiences that enhanced me as a person. Thankfully, I have been fortunate enough to take part in these experiences. However, when it comes to the parts of your life that define who you are I feel that you must look at how you use your abilities and skills to help others in times of need. For me, I feel that this took place in June of last year. 

    One thing that I have always held close to me is respecting and helping those who served our country. This past June I had an opportunity to take part in my belief and I did. I took advantage of the racing event that my father and I take part in. I used this time to raise money for the Blue Star Mothers program. This program is run by the mothers of either active or past duty military members. They raise money to help the families of our soldiers as they fight through hard times. This came into play especially during covid when it became extremely stressful for the families of our soldiers. This group also takes part in another group called the Golden Star Mothers. This group helps the families of our fallen soldiers. 

    Overall, this entire process took around 2 months for me to set up, find donors, and complete. Luckily, I was able to use many of the connections my family has through our business in order to find my donors and ultimately raise money. At the beginning, we had a goal of raising $2000 for this program. However, by the end I had raised $11,000 for this group and their efforts. I was so happy that I was able to use my abilities and my family’s connections in order to well surpass my goal and help out those in need. 

    Being able to take part in this is something that I will be able to carry with me and be proud of for many years to come. I was able to help a cause that I truly believe in and show just how much I appreciate those that give up everything and so much more for our way of life. Did it take up many days and hours of my life that I could have used for various different things? Yes, it did. Would I do it all over again if given the chance? Yes, yes I would.
